What quality YouTube actually gives you

YouTube stores a video as several separate streams rather than one file. Anything at 1080p or above is delivered as video-only, with the sound held in its own audio stream, which is why the highest resolutions have to be paired back together before you get a playable file. Combined video-and-audio streams generally stop at 720p, and on older uploads at 360p.

The formats you will see depend on what the uploader provided. Most videos offer MP4 with H.264 video, which plays anywhere without extra software. Many also carry WebM with VP9, and newer uploads increasingly include AV1 — both compress better at the same resolution but are fussier on older phones and TVs. If you want the file to simply work everywhere, take the MP4.

Resolution is capped by the source. A video uploaded at 1080p will never offer 4K no matter which tool you use, so the 2160p option appears only on videos genuinely published in 4K. DropNFlix lists every rung the video actually has, with its file size, so you can see the trade before committing.

Videos that will not download, and why

Private videos and unlisted videos you do not have the link for are not reachable, because the request never gets past YouTube's access check. The same applies to members-only content behind a channel subscription.

Age-restricted videos require a signed-in session to confirm the viewer's age. DropNFlix does not ask you to log in and does not store credentials, so those videos are out of reach by design rather than by limitation.

Live streams cannot be captured while still running, since there is no finished file to fetch — wait until the broadcast ends and YouTube publishes the archive. Purchased or rented films are protected by DRM and are never downloadable through any third-party tool.

Which YouTube links work

Any standard watch URL is fine — the long `youtube.com/watch?v=…` form you get from the address bar, and the short `youtu.be/…` form the Share button produces. Mobile links (`m.youtube.com`) and YouTube Music links (`music.youtube.com`) resolve the same way, so you can paste straight from a phone without editing anything out.

Extra parameters on the end do not matter. Timestamps (`&t=90s`), playlist references, and tracking tags are ignored, so there is no need to trim the URL down before pasting. If you paste a playlist link, DropNFlix resolves the first playable video in it rather than failing — grab the individual watch URLs if you want a specific one further down the list.

What will not work: private videos, members-only uploads, purchases and rentals, and anything region-blocked where you are. Those need an authenticated session that a public tool has no business holding. If a link fails, open it in a normal browser tab first — if it asks you to sign in there, it will not resolve here either.

Picking a resolution that actually plays

Every format is listed with its resolution and file size before you commit, so you can weigh sharpness against storage. Anything 480p or above is marked Recommended — that is the point where text in a video stays legible on a phone screen. A ten-minute talk at 1080p typically lands somewhere in the low hundreds of megabytes; the same clip at 360p is a fraction of that.

One quirk worth knowing: YouTube serves some of its higher resolutions in H.265/HEVC, which downloads perfectly but refuses to open in a lot of browsers, older phones, and video editors — you get a file that looks broken but is not. DropNFlix pushes those encodes down the list and prefers a widely-playable H.264 MP4 at the same resolution, so the option sitting at the top is the one most likely to just open.

You may also see WebM alongside MP4 at certain resolutions. WebM is a smaller file at equivalent quality and plays fine in modern browsers, but MP4 is the safer pick if the video is heading into an editor, a TV, or an older device.

Audio-only downloads

Every YouTube link also offers an Audio MP3 option that pulls the soundtrack out as a standard MP3 — useful for lectures, podcasts uploaded as video, interviews, and live sets you would rather have as a file than a tab. It plays in any music app and imports into any editor.

Where the original audio stream is already in a clean container, you may see an M4A option listed with its bitrate. M4A is generally the better-sounding of the two at the same bitrate; MP3 is the more universally compatible. Either downloads as a single file with no video track, so it is a small fraction of the full download.
