A Short is an ordinary YouTube video presented in a vertical player, which is why a `youtube.com/shorts/…` link and the standard `watch?v=` link for the same clip resolve to the same file. Either form can be pasted without editing.

Because Shorts are vertical, quality is labelled by the shorter side of the frame — a full-height Short reads as 720p rather than 1280p. That keeps the number meaningful and comparable to the horizontal videos elsewhere on the site.

Shorts are usually short enough that file size is rarely the deciding factor: even a 1080p sixty-second clip is typically a modest download. That makes it worth simply taking the highest Recommended option unless you are on a tight data connection.

As with any YouTube download, some higher-resolution encodes come through as H.265/HEVC, which many phones and editors refuse to open. Those are ranked below the widely-playable H.264 MP4 at the same resolution, so the option at the top of the list is the one that opens reliably.
