Instagram re-encodes everything on upload. A clip filmed in 4K on a modern phone is compressed well before it reaches anyone else, so the copy available for download is the processed version, not the original camera file. This is why an Instagram download will never look as sharp as the footage still sitting in the creator's camera roll.

Reels and feed videos come back as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Vertical Reels are commonly 1080x1920, feed posts are often square or 4:5, and the exact numbers depend on how the creator exported before uploading.

Audio is carried inside the same file, so choosing the Audio MP3 option extracts the sound rather than fetching a separate track. That is useful for saving a voiceover or a song clip, but the quality ceiling is whatever Instagram's own encode preserved.

Posts from private accounts are only visible to approved followers, and that check happens on Instagram's side before any file is served. No downloader can work around it, and a tool that asks for your Instagram password to try is one to walk away from.

Stories disappear after 24 hours. Once expired, the link no longer points at anything, so the window to save a Story is genuinely short.

Carousel posts hold several items behind one URL. Which item a link resolves to depends on how the link was copied, so if you get the wrong clip, reopen the specific slide and copy the link again from there.

Reels (`instagram.com/reel/…`), video posts in the main feed (`/p/…`), and older IGTV uploads (`/tv/…`) all resolve, as does the shortened `instagr.am` domain. Copy the link from the app's Share sheet or straight out of the browser address bar — both give the same usable URL.

Only public content works. Posts from private accounts, Stories, and anything that requires you to be following the account need a signed-in session, which a public downloader does not have. If the post opens for a logged-out visitor in a private browsing window, it will resolve here.

For a carousel — the swipeable posts with several items — the first playable video in the set is what gets pulled. If the clip you want is third in the carousel, open it on its own first and copy that link instead.

Instagram video is mostly shot vertically, so quality is labelled by the shorter side of the frame: a full-height Reel reads as 720p rather than 1280p. That keeps the numbers meaningful — 720p means the same visual sharpness whether the video is vertical or horizontal.

Instagram re-encodes uploads fairly aggressively on its own, so the ceiling is whatever the platform actually stored, not whatever the creator originally filmed. A Reel shot in 4K on a modern phone commonly comes back at 1080p or below. Every option shows its file size up front, and anything 480p or higher is flagged Recommended.

MP4 is the usual container here and it plays everywhere without fuss — on iPhone, on Android, in browsers, and in any editor you might import it into.

On iPhone, Safari drops the download into the Files app under Downloads. To get it into your camera roll, open Files, tap the video, hit Share, and choose Save Video. On Android the file goes to your Downloads folder and most gallery apps pick it up automatically alongside your photos.

There is also an Audio MP3 option on every Instagram link, which extracts just the sound. It is the fastest way to keep a track, a voiceover, or a trending audio clip without carrying the video file around.

Instagram hosts video in three shapes and they behave slightly differently. Reels are vertical, capped in length, and re-encoded hardest — expect 1080p at best regardless of what was filmed. Feed videos posted to the grid can be horizontal or square and often retain a little more detail. Older IGTV uploads at `/tv/` links are typically the longest and were encoded under different rules again.

This matters when a quality option you expected is not in the list. A horizontal feed video labelled 1080p and a vertical Reel labelled 1080p are not the same pixel count — the Reel is 1080 across its shorter side. Neither is wrong; the label just describes the frame differently depending on orientation.
