TikTok serves most videos as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which is the most broadly compatible combination there is — the file will open on any phone, laptop, or smart TV without conversion.

Vertical videos are typically 1080x1920, though TikTok re-encodes uploads and some clips top out at 720x1280. That ceiling is set when the video is processed, so a clip that TikTok stored at 720p cannot be recovered at 1080p later. Whether a clean, watermark-free version exists varies per video, and it depends on how TikTok processed that particular upload. Videos removed for a policy strike, or taken down by the creator, stop resolving immediately even if the link still exists in your messages. Region-locked clips may also fail depending on where the request originates.

Both TikTok link styles resolve: the full `tiktok.com/@username/video/…` URL you get from the web player, and the short `vm.tiktok.com/…` link the app's Share sheet copies. You do not need to expand the short link yourself — paste it as-is and it gets followed.

Grabbing the link in the app takes two taps: Share, then Copy Link. On the web, the address bar already holds the right URL while the video is open. Either way you are copying a public address, not logging in anywhere.

Videos on private accounts, and anything the creator has restricted from downloading or that is unavailable in your region, will not resolve. Photo-mode slideshow posts are also a different content type from video posts and may not return a video file.

TikTok encodes a large share of its library in `bytevc1`, its label for H.265/HEVC. That codec is efficient and looks great in the app, but it is the single most common reason a downloaded TikTok opens as a black screen, throws "format not supported", or imports into an editor with no picture.
