Reels are vertical, commonly 1080x1920, delivered as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Instagram compresses on upload, so the download matches Instagram's processed copy rather than the creator's original export.

The soundtrack is embedded in the video file, which means the Audio MP3 option pulls the sound out of that same encode. Licensed music inside a Reel remains the rights holder's, so saving it for personal listening is a very different matter from reusing it in something you publish.

Reels are shot 9:16, so quality is labelled by the shorter side of the frame — a full-height Reel shows as 720p rather than 1280p. This is deliberate: 720p then means the same visual sharpness whether the clip is vertical or horizontal, instead of vertical videos appearing to be twice the quality they are.

Instagram re-encodes on upload, so the available ceiling is what the platform stored rather than what the creator filmed. A Reel shot in 4K frequently comes back at 1080p or lower, and no tool can recover what was discarded at upload. Each option lists its file size, and 480p and above are marked Recommended.

Files arrive as MP4 with no watermark added and no re-encode applied — the same encode Instagram serves, just saved to your device instead of streamed.

Every Reel link offers an Audio MP3 option that extracts just the audio track. That is the quickest route to saving a trending sound, an original song, or a voiceover as a standalone file you can play in any music app.

The MP3 is a fraction of the size of the video, which makes it a practical choice when you only ever wanted the audio — a track you heard in a Reel and want to listen to properly, rather than the clip itself.

On iPhone, Safari saves the download into the Files app under Downloads rather than straight into Photos. To move it into your camera roll, open Files, tap the video, hit the Share icon, and choose Save Video. An MP3 simply stays in Files, ready to play or move wherever you want it.

On Android, the file lands in your Downloads folder and most gallery apps index it automatically, so it turns up beside your photos without any extra step. If you want it filed into a specific album, Google Photos or your Gallery app can move it in a couple of taps.
